Touch Networking launched in Weybridge
TOUCH Networking - to boost businesses in Elmbridge and Runnymede during the recession - was launched at Noir Bar in Weybridge on Tuesday.
Businessmen and women from nearby areas turned up for the launch at the Heath Road club for an evening of networking.
It will be held every Tuesday for the next three weeks on a trial basis and interested guests can sign up for membership.
Graphic designer Paul Benewith who set up Touch said: "We want to lift local businesses during this credit crunch and to benefit the community."
Mr Benewith had been to a few business networking lunches but he said the problem was they were often held early in the morning and members would often be too busy thinking about the day ahead.
He added: "With Touch Networking guests have the chance to network in an informal manner.
"The first evening was successful with 36 people attending, who all networked and got talking with one another.
"Our ethos is 'if you scratch my back I'll scratch yours', helping each other in the recession.
"Everyone wants more work these days especially those who are self-employed."
He hopes he will gain up to 80 members to start with from all positions but says that only one member per profession can become a member to avoid competition.
Darren Allen, of Primrose Hill, Hersham set up his catering company How Can We Help You, five years ago. Operating from home he covers weddings and corporate events but also gives 10% of his profits to the Rainbow Trust in Leatherhead, which provides practical and emotional support to families with children who have life-limiting illnesses.
He said: "It's an ideal way to let other companies know about my business and promote my work. I hope from this I can get some extra business."
Grahame Benewith, of Cavendish Road, Weybridge owns his own building company. He said this was his third recession he had seen in his life. He added: "At the moment we all need a push to generate some life into business and the Government aren't going to do anything about it. I have seen many great craftsman out of a job and it's sad. I think it's dire to see highly skilled people sitting at home."
