Pollingtons newsagent in Oatlands Drive was the scene of an attempted burglary in the early hours of Tuesday, January 12.

The suspects attempted to break open the front door at around 1.10am, but it is believed that when the security alarms were triggered, they fled the scene.

It is estimated that over £500 worth of damage was caused to the front door.

Police attended the scene and carried out a thorough search of the area but the suspects were not located.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is urged to contact Surrey police on 0845 125 2222, quoting reference EL/10/232 or alternatively by phoning Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

A 40 year old man, who was arrested in connection with the Milly Dowler murder case in October, has been released without charge.

Nirmal Gharu, from West London, was questioned by police about a red Daewoo Nexia car which officers believe could have been used to transport the 13 year old's body when she disappeared from Walton in March 2001.

Mr Gharu was released on bail, which the police have now confirmed has been cancelled with no further charges to be brought.

He was held on suspicion of assisting an offender.

Two men pretending to be members of the Surrey Ambulance Service tricked an elderly man into letting them into his Thames Street house on Tuesday, December 29.

The two suspects approached the man, who is in his eighties, and convinced him they were there to check up on him.

They entered the house, shortly after 3.30pm but left quickly and are not believed to have taken anything.

Two men have been sentenced to a total of 18 years for their part in robbing a security van outside Tesco in Brooklands in March this year.

At Kingston Crown Court, Mohammed Tayab Khan, 25 of Streatham admitted robbery, theft of a motor vehicle and dangerous driving and Kemal Andrew Thomas, 29, of Thorton Heath admitted robbery and theft of a motor vehicle.

At around 7.25 am on Saturday, March 21, the thieves followed a G4 security van into the car park of the superstore in Barnes Wallis Drive, Weybridge.

Kevin Coyler, 58, of Marine Parade East was reported missing by his landlord on Friday, October 16, but it is believed he had not been seen for about four weeks prior to the report being made.

He was last seen on CCTV withdrawing money from the Lloyds Bank in High Street, on Monday, October 12.

Police are appealing for witnesses after a charity collection box was stolen in broad daylight.

A box for the British Heart Foundation, was taken on Wednesday, November 11 at some point between 8am and 3.30pm from the Weybridge Centre, off Churchfield Road.

Two men are believed to have gone into the centre for retired people, asked for a drink and snatched the box, while they were left unattended.

The next Weybridge neighbourhood policing panel meeting is to be held on Thursday, November 19, at 7pm.

Taking place at St James' church hall, in Church Street, it is an opportunity for residents to voice their concerns and meet their local police community support officers, Mark Saunders and Helen Wyeth and their neighbourhood specialist officer, PC Richard Bowen.

PC Bowen, said: "Neighbourhood panel meetings have been set up to give residents and businesses the opportunity to tell the neighbourhood team what they think is the most significant policing problem in their community and to get advice from us."

ONE week after re-opening since a fire at Noir Bar Elmbridge detectives are appealing for information following the allegation of an assault at the Heath Road bar in Weybridge.ends

Elmbridge borough has reached its 500th Neighbourhood Watch, with residents in Burwood Road, Hersham becoming the latest to introduce the scheme.

The news of the latest borough Neighbourhood Watch, comes at a time when the Association of Chief Police Officers reports that areas with a watch scheme suffer from 79% less incidents of crime than the rest of the UK.

The objectives of a Neighbourhood Watch are to prevent anti-social behaviour and crime, reduce the fear of crime and to improve the quality of life for tenants and residents.

Newsreader Nicholas Owen is helping Elmbridge council launch its Distraction Burglary Week, which starts on Monday, September 28 at the Weybridge Centre, at 10.30am.

The renowned journalist will be launching the week, which is aimed to help raise awareness of distraction burglary and cold calling, at the centre in Churchfield Road, which will be followed by the trickster play showing how people trick their way into homes.

Throughout the week, displays and information cards will be put up and useful telephone numbers will be handed out at the retired people's centres throughout the borough.
